In what ways will teaching critical thinking skills to kindergarten children impact their visible thinking?

Why teach critical thinking skills?

It's crucial that we begin teaching critical thinking skills from a young age. Learning these skills helps children in areas such as language, literacy, understanding different perspectives, problem solving and understanding decisions as well as the related consequences.

Laying the foundation

To prepare students for our playground critical inquiry project I engaged them in a shorter inquiry unit about dinosaurs. Throughout this unit students participated in several thinking strategies as we explored what we know about dinosaurs as well as the wonderings that we have!

This schedule outlines the questions that will be addressed throughout our playground critical inquiry project as well as thinking routines that will be integrated.

Exploring playgrounds

Throughout the playground critical inquiry unit we explored playgrounds from the past as well as those found in countries around the world.

Thinking Routines

Throughout each inquiry unit I implemented several thinking strategies such as See Think Wonder and Zoom In. Each of these strategies encouraged students to be involved and share any thoughts about the topic at hand.
